OUR ETHOS

Techniker Consulting Engineers do things differently.  They understand the importance of their service industry and put client satisfaction at the forefront of their business. 

Over recent years there has been a trend for engineering practices to become ever larger with companies swallowed-up to create huge international consortia.  Medium-sized companies that are able to respond quickly to the ever-changing demands of the building industry are becoming thinner on the ground. Having consulted with a number of clients and stakeholders in the construction industry, we have acknowledged and responded to their need for a more dynamic practice with the experience and knowledge to deliver high-quality structural engineering services.

We understand the importance of providing a dedicated and consistent professional design team and this forms the basis of our approach to project delivery. Not only do we apply our extensive engineering expertise to projects, we also maintain a keen commercial awareness when designing and reviewing an existing design.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Techniker Consulting Engineers has been formed to amalgamate the structural engineering expertise of David Connolly (CEng, FIStructE, FICE, MHKIE) and Matthew Wells (RIBA, CEng, FIStructE, FICE).

David & Matthew both share the same passion for structural engineering design, applying their knowledge to facilitate projects from concept through to successful completion.

Their experience of working together dates back to 2001 when they worked between the UK and Hong Kong, designing projects in the UK and then managing each project through the approvals and construction stages in Hong Kong.

Since David returned from Hong Kong in 2005, they have continued to build on their working relationship and have subsequently collaborated on a number of projects in the UK, to include the RIBA award-winning Bluecoat Arts Centre in Liverpool, the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, in addition to specialist wind engineering and cladding studies at MediaCityUK, the home of the BBC and ITV in the North of England.

They recognise their ability to work well together and enjoy working creatively to further develop and enhance the design process.

Our Vision

OUR VISION

Techniker Consulting Engineers is based in the North West of England, with projects delivered across the UK and managed directly by either David Connolly or Matthew Wells.  This fresh approach draws on the strengths of both of the partner’s engineering expertise, whilst providing the client with a single point of contact and enabling them to drive the business forward in-line with their core company values.

David and Matthew are both fellows and peer reviewers of the IStructE and committed to investing in the future skills of the construction industry.  Training and development will be at the heart of their business, with team members mentored through each stage of a project.

As a newly formed brand, Techniker will develop a strong portfolio of projects primarily in the North West where David will be the first point of call, and will focus on the skills and experience he has acquired from working on a diverse range of civil and structural engineering projects in the UK and Hong Kong, the latter providing particular expertise in the design and construction of high-rise buildings.

Since returning from Hong Kong in 2005, David has been working in the North-West and has created good working relationships with developers, officials and other professionals in the building industry.

Further to joining Halcrow Yolles in 2007 for a four-year period and later forming his own freelance structural engineering consultancy, Alchemy Consultants & Engineers in 2011, David has further developed his reputation in the industry through good working relationships and mutual trust.  This has led to repeat business with a number of clients and recommendations to new clients.

The demand for David’s expertise on larger scale projects has resulted in the requirement to increase his resource base and therefore the opportunity has arisen to develop his own company further with a friend and colleague who he enjoys working with.  This has resulted in the formation of the Techniker Consulting Engineers partnership.  A brand of integrity and values that they strongly believe in and form the ethos of the company.

Matthew Wells

Matthew Wells

RIBA CEng FIStructE FICE

Critically acclaimed structural engineer, architect and author, Matthew unifies structural engineering with architectural design. He founded his consultancy Techniker in 1993 to bring inspiration to non-standard design problems. His particular area of interest is in developing the interface between structural design and architecture.

Matthew has delivered a wide range of award winning new-build and refurbishment structures including arts centres, housing, schools and offices as well as a number of public realm and infrastructure projects. Key projects include Stadthaus, the tallest timber residential structure in the world; Sandal Magma School, one of the most carbon efficient primary schools in the UK; the Royal Victoria Dock Footbridge, a fully prefabricated transporter bridge assembled on site without bolting or welding and the innovative Miles Stair at Somerset House pioneering the first use of fibre reinforced concrete in cantilever treads.

Innovations continue to be made in glass design, timber engineering, precast and high strength concrete, prefabrication, steel structures, amphibious houses and building dynamics.

TOMASZ MICHALSKI

TOMASZ MICHALSKI

MSc CEng MIStuctE

Experienced structural designer, Tomasz has worked in the UK construction industry for over 10 years.  His work experience includes various commercial, private and educational buildings as well as pedestrian and large highway bridges.  Tomasz has particular interest in advanced structural modelling techniques for high-rise buildings and bridges as well as structural glass design.

MARK JOHNSON

MARK JOHNSON

MSc CEng MIStructE

Experienced structural engineer and 3D BIM specialist, Mark has over 22 years experience in structural engineering design.  He is keen to see the uptake of BIM within the design process and is very proficient in the use of Revit and associated 3D modelling and analysis software.  His experience includes commercial and housing developments, hotels, airport structures as well as the power sector including renewable energy.
